Rip, Rip, Rip-Off At King Kullen Supermarket
(2009-05-02 at 13:47:27 )

I went to the card shop this morning to find a thank you card to send to
a great gentleman for a gift that he had mailed to me.

When I left the card shop I went into the King Kullen Supermarket at 1441
Richmond Avenue on Staten Island to see if they had any jars of minced
garlic. I used to come into this store a lot when it was a Waldbaums.

Supermarkets are required, by law, to display the name and price of the
products that they have for sale, right under the product, on the shelf.

On the shelf the price of a 8.5 ounce jar of Badia Minced Garlic in Oil
is prominently diplayed as $1.89. I took one of the jars to the self
checkout machines and scanned the jar and placed it within a plastic bag
and then pressed the finish and pay.

To my astonishment my one item rang up as costing $2.79. I am an old man
who in one month will be 65 years old. During the past two years I have
found myself making mistakes and being confused every once in a while.

So I put four pennies, three quarters, and two one dollar bills into the
machine and put the receipt into the plastic bag with my minced garlic. I
then went back down the aisle I had just left to see if I was now Senile.

Well, this time, I was right; the price on the shelf is $1.89. I was told
by the checkout clerk that I had to go to customer service.

I have been living on Staten Island since 1997 and sometimes the prices
for products within a supermarkets computer system may vary from the
price that is on the shelf due to sales and price changes.

Whenever there is a discrepency a store clerk will go to the aisle with
me where the product is stacked and check the price on the receipt
against the price that is displayed on the shelf.

That did not happen today! The King Kullen Customer Service Person had me
sign a white form that already had lots of names on it and then she gave
me a dime, a nickel, and three quarters!!

I put the ninety cents away and left the store. While I was walking to
the bus stop I thought about the people walking up and down the aisles
of the King Kullen Supermarket who were about to get robbed blind at the
checkout counter.
