And More From Henry David Thoreau

I please myself with imagining a State at last which can afford to be just to all men, and to treat the individual with respect as a neighbor; which even would not think it inconsistent with its own repose, if a few were to live aloof from it, not meddling with it, nor embraced by it, who fulfilled all the duties of neighbors and fellow-men. A State which bore this kind of fruit, and suffered it to drop off as fast as it ripened, would prepare the way for a still more perfect and glorious State, which also I have imagined, but not yet anywhere seen.

From Judge Learned Hand

Liberty lies in the hearts of men and women; when it dies there, no constitution, no law, no court can save it.

More From Thomas Paine

Of more worth is one honest man to society and in the sight of God, than all the crowned ruffians that ever lived.

From Herbert Hoover

Every collectivist revolution rides in on a Trojan horse of "Emergency." It was a tactic of Lenin, Hitler, and Mussolini. In the collectivist sweep over a dozen minor countries of Europe, it was the cry of the men striving to get on horseback. And "Emergency" became the justification of the subsequent steps. This technique of creating emergency is the greatest achievement that demagoguery attains. The invasion of New Deal Collectivism was introduced by this same Trojan Horse.

From Jacob G. Hornberger

Thus, what job do you think a bigot would naturally gravitate to in order to exercise his bigotry? There is only one job in America where a bigot can exercise his bigotry to his hearts content and even be thanked and praised for it. He can become a cop, a job that enables bigots to arbitrarily stop blacks whenever the bigot wants, and humiliate, abuse, and even kill them with impunity. And in the process get praised and thanked for helping win the war on drugs or establishing law and order in the community.

More From George Washington

If, in the opinion of the people, distribution or modification of the constitutional powers be in any particular wrong, let it be corrected by an amendment in the way which the Constitution designates. But let there be no change by usurpation; for though this, in one instance, may be the instrument of good, it is the customary weapon by which free governments are destroyed. The precedent must always greatly overbalance in permanent evil any partial or transient benefit which the use can at any time yield.

More From Thomas Paine

He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself.

From Policing for Profit: The Abuse Of Civil Asset Forfeiture, Institute for Justice

"Civil forfeiture laws represent one of the most serious assaults on private property rights in the nation today. Under civil forfeiture, police and prosecutors can seize your car or other property, sell it and use the proceeds to fund agency budgets--all without so much as charging you with a crime. Unlike criminal forfeiture, where property is taken after its owner has been found guilty in a court of law, with civil forfeiture, owners need not be charged with or convicted of a crime to lose homes, cars, cash or other property. Americans are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, but civil forfeiture turns that principle on its head. With civil forfeiture, your property is guilty until you prove it innocent."

From Joseph Goebbels

The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and-or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the State.

Liberty is the only thing you cannot have unless you are willing to give it to others.

Yet More From Ludwig von Mises

The existence of the armaments industries is a consequence of the warlike spirit, not its cause.

Yet More From Cousin Lucky

I think that the very worst " welfare program " ever put into place is " Aid to Dependent Children "!! Under this program the most extremely unfit mothers have many children that are condemned at conception to suffer 24four7.In the NYCHA building that I live within the prostitutes and drug dealers are treated like royalty because they pay the police to freely operate. Here children receive very little upbringing or none at all. Many of them have mothers that are substance abusers or just plain nuts. Very few of these children grow up to lead productive lives; most either end up in jail or dead. Some of the children are brutalized or killed by the mothers " live-in " male guests!!There is no greater cancer on United States minorities than this one welfare program!! My whole working life I have heard my co-workers lament about " welfare queens " and their dysfunctional families!!I feel that our present political leadership fully intends to " gut " every governmental handout now being funded to poor people!!  Of course the governmental programs for the rich and powerful will just grow bigger!! In a year to 18 months you will see what I mean!!

From Karl Jaspers

Mans freedom opens up to him an opportunity to become that which he can authentically be.

From Author L. Neil Smith

"The first and most important thing to understand about politics is this: forget Right, Left, Center, socialism, fascism, or democracy. Every government that exists --or ever existed, or ever will exist-- is a kleptocracy, meaning ‘"rule by thieves." Competing ideologies merely provide different excuses to separate the Productive Class from what they produce. If the taxpayer-voters will not willingly fork over to end poverty, then maybe they will cough up to fight drugs or terrorism. Conflicting ideologies, as presently constituted, are nothing more than a cover for what is really going on, like the colors of competing gangs."

From William Somerset Maugham

If a nation values anything more than freedom, it will lose its freedom; and the irony of it is that, if it is comfort or money it values more, it will lose that too.
